Strawberry Kiwi

The vending machine at our school has a drink in it called Strawberry Kiwi, made by Dole. It is probably the most popular drink in the vending machine. It is very delicious and many of the students enjoy it. I think they should put more then just one row because it becomes sold out so fast. It is always the first drink sold out, then some others are barely ever purchased. More people would buy drinks if they had more delicious drinks like strawberry kiwi.

Strawberry Kiwi is not only delicious. It is made with real fruit, and provides you with 125% of your daily value of vitamin C. Vitamin C prevents cancer and other harmful germs. Strawberry is such a refreshing drink to have if you’re hot after recess or gym class. Who wouldn’t enjoy this cancer preventing, refreshing, drink?

I have always enjoyed this delicious drink, and anyone who hasn't tried it, needs to go buy one right now.

In conclusion, Dole makes many other fruit drinks that are healthy and taste great. In my opinion, even if none of them are as good as strawberry kiwi, they should include other juices in the vending machine.

Blogs

At the beginning of October, I published my first blog post. It was a write up I did about poverty. Ever since October, I have written up different blogs for LA. It is a weekly assignment, and we have one class to work on it before its homework. I’ve had different opinions on blogs since October.

My first couple blog posts I got marks that I didn’t like. I think for the first 5 or 6 posts, I got the exact same mark. However, I thought blogs were fun because I could say how I felt about a certain topic. I think that blogs were good for showing me how working harder improves my grade. I liked to see that when I worked hard it pays off.

Recently I haven’t thought of any good things to write about, so I don’t do very much in class. That leads to homework or getting a zero. Even though I don’t like blogs anymore, I think they are a good idea for teachers to do. They make students practice writing proper paragraphs, and I think they make starting essays easier. Blogs are supposed to be 2-3 paragraphs, and essays are supposed to be 5. It isn’t a big difference in length, and what you write about is the same.

After half a year of writing blogs, I think I will be prepared for high school essays, and writing assignments in general. Blogs have been a good use of class time, and they have taught me a lot. I hope that teachers still use blogs for grade 8 students, instead of one speech, or one essay a year.

Middle School Track and Field Day

This Friday is the annual Middle School's Track and Field Day. Everyone in middle school goes to a different school to do track and field events. It is a friendly competition that people are strongly encouraged to try. However, there are different opinions if we should have this day, and whether people want to go or not.

I've been to 2 track and field days before the one this Friday. If you come in the top 5 for an event, you get a ribbon. I think this is a great way to encourage people to get more active and try doing more sports. If we get interested in track and field events we could get more kids in shape instead of sitting on the couch watching t.v.

I never liked track and field very much. I've always rather played a sport with more then just running or jumping. Track and field has different events if someone is better at throwing or jumping instead of running, but they mainly focus on one thing. I would like track and field day more if they put in other sports too. It's called track and field day for a reason, but would it hurt to add some other sport in on the side too?

In other track and field days, we have divided at the end of the day into our houses to work together in a basic obstacle course. In grade 6 I didn't like it because I was slower then most of the grade 7's and 8's. It’s a good idea though, because the people who didn’t win in the individual events can win in their house.

King Of Pop

There are certain famous artists that have made millions off their talents in music. Michael Jackson for dancing and singing. Madonna is known for entertaining and unique dancing. Many of these artists have been giving a certain title. For example, Michael Jackson is known as the King Of Pop. A new young artist, Justin Bieber, is calling himself the next King Of Pop. I think this is outrageous and completely ridiculous.

Michael Jackson is a famous and well-known being. He spent decades making music that everyone loved or at least respected. He had many issues with his image. He had very many plastic surgeries, changed his race, and he was accused of bad things. However, when he died recently, he was well missed and respected.

Justin Bieber has been popular for less than a year. He was discovered on youtube. He is well loved by teenage girls. What about everyone else? Adults don't find his music appealing and neither do guys. He has some hits that lasted a few weeks. "One Time" was the top song for a few weeks. What about Michael Jackson though? He's had millions of records sold, and many of his hit songs lasted longer then any of Justin’s. Michael Jackson is a legendary icon that everyone knows. Justin Bieber is only 16! How can he be calling himself the King Of Pop? He has no experience being a musician.

The King Of Pop is a huge honor. Michael Jackson deserves it after a long successful career. I think it’s insulting to make a new teenage artist The King Of Pop after less then a year of being popular. Many people have to work really, really hard to get a tenth of how much Justin Bieber makes. Justin Bieber hasn’t even begun to compare to Michael Jackson. If he wants to become the King Of Pop, he has to make his career much more memorable and appeal to more then just teenage girls.

Rugby

Rugby and track are completely different sports. I think everyone has an opinion on which one is "better", but I don't think that either one is "better" then the other. Most people that play sports prefer one over another. That's because all sports are different and they have different pros and cons.

Rugby is great for contact and teamwork. If you like hitting people (like Mike) then you would probably like rugby more then track and field. In rugby you have to work as a team to get the ball up the field. One guy usually can't deke through 15 other people. For track and field, however, track is entirely individual. Track is a lot different then rugby in almost everyway.

Summer

During summer, I usually do everything outside. Swimming, basketball, campfires, and just enjoying the weather. When I lived in Georgia, I was upset because it would get so hot in the summer, that people didn't go outside. Not a lot of people had pools because it would be hard to keep the water cool enough to go swimming in!

Summer is a perfect time for traveling. Two months away from school leaves a lot of spare time. I sometimes travel, but even staying at home is amazing because there is so much to do. Every summer, I go to my cottage for 6 weeks. I love spending time swimming in the lake and fishing on the dock.

Summer is a great time to do anything. Everyone has the opportunity to do whatever they want for 2 months. I strongly agree that summer is an amazing time, and shouldn't be wasted inside.

Evensong

Evensong is not something as simple as chair chapel. I used to think there was no point in evensong, and that we should get rid of it all together. I just thought of it as a complete waste of time, that no one liked it, and I never understood why it is a part of SJK.

I don’t like Evensong. It’s boring and repetitive. However, SJK is an Anglican school, so students and parents should expect some religious things. I don’t think that repeating things out of a book is something that students want to do. Mrs. Duldahardt said that some teachers use evensong as a church service. I completely understand and respect that, but should we be forced to participate? I’m not against the school having evensong, but for the people who aren’t religious, it doesn’t do anything for them.

There is much more to evensong then I used to think. I never liked evensong, but I wouldn’t take it out of SJK. It is something that SJK should keep as a tradition, but I think a lot more people wouldn’t hate it so much if they changed it to make it more suitable for this century.

Bucket List

I saw a movie called The Bucket List with my sister and my mom. It was about two middle-aged men who were diagnosed with cancer, and they were only given approximately 6 weeks to live. One was very wealthy, so he spends the rest of his life doing whatever he wants. I never would want to be in their situation, but there are a lot of things that I want to do before I die. If I were to list them all, I would never finish this blog, but there are certain big things that everyone should experience in life.

First, I want to drive a Ferrari or a Lamborghini extremely fast. I know that doesn’t sound amazing, but think about rollercoasters. Some people like the heights, some people like the twists and turns, some people don’t like them at all, but I love the wind rushing past your face. And to be in control of that speed would be an indescribable experience in my mind.

Second, I want to move to somewhere in Europe for a year. I would spread touring Europe over a year instead of packing everything into short vacations. I will go through every country in Europe, and visit all the main attractions. There are so many things to see, but the most important place I want to go is the Eiffel tower.

Lastly, before I die, I want to rob a bank. Not just a little black ski mask stunt, a huge, complicated, intense robbery like in all the movies. Oceans eleven comes to mind, but that is a casino, so that wouldn’t work out too well. It must be hard to see, an 80-year-old guy with a bunch of thugs robbing a bank, but its something not everyone gets to do. Screw living old and dying peacefully in your sleep, I want to go out and get rich or die trying. What else is there to do in retirement anyway?

Future

I remember when I was around 6 years old. I would wake up at 7:00, exactly, every morning, run downstairs, and watch cartoons. I got a lot of crazy ideas from cartoons, but the one thing I remember most is that in every cartoon, the future had flying cars and tight chrome spandex suits. Movies also show 3-D TV screens and weird buildings with silver and gold everything. However, I think the future will be a little different than what the cartoons and movies show.

While everyone talks about the future, the “future” is almost impossible to describe. The future is 20 seconds from now, and 5 billion years from now. I don’t think that in the future everything will be chrome, or even metal. I think that the world is growing industrially, and if we don’t stop it, then it will lead to some issues. Global Warming and air pollution are problems that we need to pay attention to.

I think the physical world won’t look much different than it does today. I think that there will be new gadgets to make our lives easier, and technology will get more complex, but cities won’t become made out of chrome and gold. Just think of how things are today. Today was the future in the 1980s when those cartoons were made, and we don’t make buildings out of shiny gold now.

$40 million

If you’ve watched TV recently, you have seen the Lotto 69 commercials. One was about playing hide and go seek with helicopters and motorboats. Another was about his friends flying in hot air balloons. If I won $40 million or something ridiculous amount of money, I would definitely buy much better things then some hot air balloons.

Traveling is a very expensive thing that enriches people’s lives. I would tour Europe during the summer and ride in a helicopter over volcanoes in Hawaii for Christmas break. There are millions of different places to travel such as Antarctica to see the penguins and Africa to see the lions and other African animals.

I dislike long, boring car rides. Buying nice cars would solve both these negative things of transportation. If you had amazing vehicles like Aston martins and Lamborghinis would definitely make the car rides more enjoyable and much, much faster. Also, buying other vehicles like helicopters and tanks and weird things like that would make errands entertaining and something to look forward to.

If you haven’t seen iron man, you have to stop reading this blog (no matter how good it is) and watch it. For those of you who have seen it, you know that Tony Stark is a very intelligent man who builds makes various machines. 3-D computer touch screens, modified cars, and most importantly he has a metal suit that flies around and shoots lasers. If I had $40 million, I would hire hundreds of mechanics and engineers to design those computers and to make flying machines that shoot lasers. It sounds weird, but who wouldn’t want a machine to fly around in?

There are so many things to do with money. The limits are set on your imagination. I hope if I won $40 million, I would have a good enough imagination to spend it in a creative way so I would be happy the rest of my life.

Middle School Should Have Macbooks

I’m the only person in my ENTIRE class without my own laptop. Having to deal with these annoying Acers with broken screens and horribly slow is really frustrating, especially since both the Lower and Upper school have Macbooks. For science, we go to Mr. Boyd in Upper school. There we use the Upper school Macbooks. I say “we” because other people in the class would rather use Macbooks then their bad computers, such as the mini-me sensation.

I think that middle school should definitely get Macbooks for many reasons. First of all, why would Lower school get them before we do? I only started using a computer in grade 4, and that was once a week for only 30-45 minutes. People at that age don’t know how to respect expensive things. So these indestructible clunkers for a computer are the perfect thing to help teach them to be nice to other people’s possessions. Second, the Acers are basically broken, so it would be a perfect time to get new ones. And lastly, no one likes these Acers, so it is encouraging people to waste their money on buying their own computers, even if they wouldn’t otherwise.

Discovery Channel isn't something I would personally watch on my free time. It isn’t the kind of tv show that I would watch because I find that it is too educational. I watch tv to relax, not to test my brain. After long days of school, coming home and watching something that makes me think.

However I think that there are lots of situations that discovery channel could be the best channel to watch. For example, discovery channel offers great images of beautiful nature and animals. At restaurants, there is usually news or sports playing. Discovery Channel would be better for restaurants that want to have a quieter, calmer feel to it.

All channels are targeted to a certain group. Tree house for toddlers, Family channel for kids, Discovery for people who are interested in science and the environment, there are so many different channels, and every one has a theme. I don’t have enough of an interest in science to watch discovery channel, but I'm sure there are people, (like tristan) that do.

Books to Movies

I have seen alot of disappointing movies that were made from books. The biggest problem is when people read books, they imagine characters differently. So choosing actors for movies can ruin the movie for me even before it starts. Last year, we started reading, The Lightning Theif as a class. I enjoyed reading this so much that I ended up buying the rest of the series. Since the books were so popular, they made a movie that is coming out soon. At first I was excited, but after watching the trailer, the image of the characters changed completely in my head.

After watching Twilight, I was surprised how good it was, never reading the book, but hearing about it. I never had the issue of the appearance of the characters because I never read the book. I thought the movie was very good, along with New Moon, and would more likely read the books after then before I watched the movies.

Did You Know

Did You Know 3.0 has amazingly surprising facts that you would never think would be possible or true. The video said that students are being prepared for jobs that don’t exist yet, involving technology that hasn’t been invented yet, to solve problems that aren’t problems yet. How would they do that? Prepare people for jobs that don't exist, but it's still mandatory because there wouldn't be any jobs for them if they weren't making new jobs constantly.

Apparently we are going to learn more in the next year then in the past 5,000 years!! How much will we know in 2020? When I imagined the future, I always thought of flying hovercrafts and see through touch screens and crazy technology like that, but I never thought it could actually happen in my lifetime. It’s amazing how advanced they make technology. We know about what happened millions and millions of years ago, and we can predict stuff thousands of years into the future.
